MXF(Material Exchange Format) is now a popular video and audio format used by many top-end camcorders. Maybe you just know it is a HD video format, but do you know what the MXF is and with what standard the MXF is compressed? This article will give you brief answers about MXF questions. What is MXF “MXF is a ‘container’ or ‘wrapper’ format which supports a number of different streams of coded ‘essence’, encoded with any of a variety of codecs, together with a metadata wrapper which describes the material contained within the MXF file.” ,from Wikipedia. MXF packs together video, audio, and programme data, such as text – together termed essence – along with metadata and places them into a wrapper. It’s body is stream based and carries the essence as well as some of the metadata. It holds a sequence of video frames, each filled with involved audio, and data essence, plus frame-based metadata. The latter typically comprises timecode and file format information for each of the video frames. This arrangement is also called an interleaved media file. MXF in use MXF is mainly used in movie and TV production, edition, presentation and save.MXF was developed to carry a subset of the Advanced Authoring Format (AAF) data model, under a policy known as the Zero Divergence Directive (ZDD). This theoretically enables MXF/AAF workflows  between non-linear editing (NLE) systems using AAF and cameras, servers, and other devices using MXF. Till now, there have no format can meet all requirements of broadcast production, while, MXF is designed to meet most of those requirements in the time being and in the future. Can MXF replace all the current media formats The answer is definitely no. It needs quite a long time for MXF to replace the current video and audio formats for there are quite a lot of video and audio files are saved as MPEG, AVI,GXF and even Quicktime formats, to convert so many files to MXF needs great efforts. But one trend is certain, there will be more and more devices supporting MXF in the future. Typical Camcorders using MXF Till now, there have been many MXF camcorders in the market, the typical examples are below: Can XF series: Canon XF100, XF105, XF300, XF305 and Canon C300; Panasonic: Panonsonic P2, HVX200, HPX170; Sony XDCAM camcorders: Sony XDCAM, PDM700, PDM-F800.
